CMS Releases FY2018 Hospice Proposed Rule

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released the FY2018 Hospice Proposed Rule. The rule proposes that the overall payments for Hospice providers increase by 1% ($180 Million).

Additionally, the Hospice cap amount for the 2018 cap year would be $28,689.04. In addition to the cap and payment updates, the rule solicits comments regarding the source(s) of clinical information for certifying terminal illness and proposes changes to the Hospice Quality Reporting Program, including proposing new quality measures utilizing data collected in the Hospice CAHPS Survey.

The proposed rule also discusses new quality measure concepts under consideration for future years, soliciting feedback on an enhanced data collection instrument similar to what home health providers have in OASIS and details the release of Hospice Compare this year including measures eligible for public reporting and opportunities for providers to preview their quality measure data prior to public reporting. The Hospice Compare website will help patients and their families make more informed choices.
