Getting Patients Better Sooner.
“Home Health Care is a wide range of health care services that can be given in your home. Home Health Care is usually less expensive, more convenient and just as effective as care you get in a hospital or skilled nursing facility.”
Believe it or not, the above quote is the first paragraph under the heading, “What is Home Health Care?” on the Medicare.gov Home Health Compare website. If CMS really believes, home health care is less expensive and just as effective as care you get in a hospital…,” why aren’t they aggressively promoting Home Health Care and providing incentives for patients to receive Home Health Care? Even if they don’t promote us, I think we’d all be happy if they quit cutting our payments and creating barriers (face to face, etc.) to Home Health.
I’ve read many articles lately that actually make the point that patients get sicker in hospitals. Anxiety, depression, flurries of treatments, infections, etc. top the list of problems that prevent patients from getting better, sooner. Even more articles speak to the many different methods hospitals are experimenting with to reduce avoidable readmissions. The common missing solution in all of these articles is Home Care!
I remain firm in my belief that the future of health care is in the home. I know you believe this also, as you see the difference you make in your patients’ lives daily. Most importantly, your patients know that your efforts keep them where they want to be, and where they have an opportunity to live independently….in their homes. Eventually, CMS will realize this.
